Alcoa’s Suralco Alumina Refinery Recognized for Best Safety Performance
Alcoa’s Suralco alumina refinery in Suriname was presented the International Aluminum Institute’s “Best Safety Performance in the World” award at the organization’s annual conference in New York earlier this month. This award is open to all aluminum companies in the world. The IAI is a global forum of aluminum producers dedicated to the development and use or aluminum as a valuable material.
“This award is significant for Suralco as it represents progress and successes after systematic and consistent approaches in the area of safety” said General Manager Warren Pendersen. “The Suralco management is extremely appreciative of its employees, as well as the IAI for the opportunity to compare their progress to that of the industry and to measure and improve our progress.”
Suralco’s Moengo mining operation was also recognized by the IAI as among the four best safety performers in the bauxite and alumina industry category.
Alcoa’s corporate safety initiative indicates clear goals for measuring progress toward achieving the 2020 strategic plan. In the area of safety, Alcoa reaches high with the following goals: zero fatality and zero lost workday injuries, zero incidents, and deployment of risk management and reduction programs to eliminate causes of injuries.
Since 1997, the IAI has collected safety performance data from the global aluminum industry and shared the results within the industry to provide an idea of overall safety. Plants submit data under an identifying reference letter and thus all data collected are confidential. In this way, owners of the data can compare their own performance against the industry’s overall performance without exposing their own performance. This system ensures that all companies report their data regardless of their actual performance, thus providing an accurate picture of the safety performance in the aluminum industry.
