Alcoa Foundation Contributes US$50,000 for Flood Relief in Suriname

PARAMARIBO and PITTSBURGH - May 17, 2006 - Alcoa Foundation announced today that it has contributed a US$50,000 grant to the Suriname Red Cross Society for disaster relief efforts following heavy flooding in the South American nation.

"This contribution from Alcoa Foundation is a direct response to the call for donations and immediate practical assistance to the many who have lost all that they had," said Warren Pedersen, managing director of the Suriname Aluminum Company (Suralco), Alcoa's operations in Suriname. "Our thoughts go out to all of the communities and our neighbors affected by the flooding."

In addition to the Alcoa Foundation grant, Suralco employees have taken the initiative to begin a fund drive to help with the relief efforts. All funds will go toward meeting the basic needs of flood victims, such as providing food, and drinkable water.

The region began to experience severe rain in early May, which caused the Suriname and Upper Marowijne rivers to overflow, devastating much of the southern part of the country as well as part of the Central Amazonian Lowlands. Alcoa's operations in Suriname are located in the northern part of the country, where Alcoa's presence dates back to 1916.
