Alcoa first entered Spain in 1972 with the purchase of a plastic closures plant near Barcelona. The company’s presence expanded significantly in 1998 with the acquisition of Inespal, which added the refinery, three smelters, three rolling plants, and two extrusion plants. Today, Alcoa is the country’s sole producer of aluminum oxide and primary aluminum and the foremost manufacturer of rolled products. Other Alcoa products currently produced in Spain include flexible and semi-rigid packaging. “Our locations are well integrated into Alcoa’s global strategy due to their efficiency, low operating costs, and close proximity to our European customer base,” said Leandro Guillen, president of Alcoa Spain. “For example, our rolling mill at Amorebieta is one of the most efficient in the world for common alloys, and our smelters are enjoying a good average energy price right now. Another strength is that our reputation in Spain and with our European customers is very good.” Investing in the Future Alcoa Spain has a history of investing in both its facilities and the surrounding communities. In 2004, Alcoa announced it would invest 64 million euros (approximately US$78 million) in technology and environmental improvements at its three smelters and refinery to reduce emissions and meet the more stringent environmental regulations. Alcoa Foundation has also made significant investments in the country, particularly in the areas of environment, education and youth training, health and family safety, and citizens with special needs. In 2005, these grants totaled US$480,000 and included ACTION and Bravo! grants earned by more than 500 employee volunteers.
