Volunteers make a difference in the classroom

The 11-year partnership between Alcoa Howmet, Whitehall, Michigan, and Ealy Elementary School, contributed to the hometown school's earning a state of Michigan 2008 Education Excellence Award for "Improving Student Achievement in Math and Science." Since 1997, Ealy Elementary students' math and science comprehension scores have increased to the mid-90s on a scale of 100 points. "Our volunteers have great enthusiasm for the program and a passion for sharing their knowledge with the children," said Judy Bosma, human resources manager. Each year about 35 employees volunteer for classroom duty.

Alcoa Howmet helps make science REAL

January 11, 2008
Alcoa Howmet in Whitehall, Michigan presented a $150,000 check from the Alcoa Foundation to REsources for Authentic Learning in Science (REAL Science) to jump start a program aimed at fostering an interest among high school students in math and science careers. Amy Heisser, Alcoa Howmet director of human resources, said, "We are fortunate that the Alcoa Foundation has recognized as a priority the need to support and contribute financially to technological education in the communities served by Alcoa Howmet locations." Alcoa Howmet, a division of Alcoa Power and Propulsion, has operations in eight states and six countries.
