Located in the Island of Sao Luis, State of Maranhão in Brazil, the smelter produces 446,000 metric tons of aluminum annually in the form of 50 and 700 pounds ingots (pure and alloyed). The Smelter is a consortium and is divided amongst Alcoa with 35%, BHP Billiton 36%, Alcan 10% and Abalco with 19%. Alumar Smelter is certified on ISO9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and SA8000.
Alumar has invested around US$ 10,000,000 in the surrounding communities within São Luis Island. More than 80% is invested in education and environmental projects.
