Christmas in October! – Jamalco leads repairs to Clarendon Infirmary

“Christmas in October! Thank you Jamalco.”  This was the response of one employee at the Clarendon Infirmary to the refurbishing work carried out by Jamalco and community volunteers at the infirmary on Friday and Saturday October 24 and 25.

On Friday, some 60 volunteers began the task of painting the wards and planting trees to beautify the surroundings while on Saturday just over 40 volunteers completed painting four of the infirmary’s six wards. In addition to members of the Jamalco workforce, volunteers from the Leo and Lions Clubs of May Pen and Kingston, the Clarendon Red Cross and Jamalco Railroad and Refinery Community Councils also assisted.
The project was designed to improve the quality of life for the 144 residents, as well as staff members of the infirmary,  and was implemented during October,  Alcoa’s Month of Service, when special emphasis is placed on giving voluntary service to communities in which Alcoa operates.
The Clarendon Infirmary was selected for attention because of the needs of the institution. The refurbishing project, which began three weeks ago, included repairs to the leaking roofs of several of the wards and reconstruction of one of the counter tops in the institution’s kitchens.
Several Jamalco contractors, Cousins Construction, FC Reynolds, K&D, Quality Plus and CCC Limited joined with the company and sponsored the roof repair.  Anthony Douglas from Jamalco’s Security Department, with assistance from his friend Bevin Brown built and tiled a new counter top in the kitchen. The group Friends of Clarendon Infirmary also assisted in securing donations of paint for the project.
On Friday afternoon, members of the Board of Alumina Limited, the Australian Company which owns 40% of Alcoa who were visiting Jamalco, planted fruit and ornamental trees at the institution.  Team leader, John Bevan said they were honored to participate in this voluntary effort as service to our community was an important ingredient in our success.
The bauxite and alumina company also presented the infirmary with gifts including bed linen, disinfectant and hand sanitizers.
Matron of the Infirmary Joyce Anderson expressed gratitude to Jamalco and the volunteers for giving a well-needed facelift to the institution, particularly as Christmas is near.
Jamalco plans to organize another workday at the infirmary in a bid to complete the work started.
