Jamalco Launches Mentorship Programme at Vere Technical High School

Students of Vere Technical High School in Clarendon are to benefit from a mentorship programme organized by Jamalco and launched at the school on Tuesday, October 21.

The programme is being executed under the theme “Success is an Attitude” and its primary objective is to provide guidance, support and leadership to students at Vere Technical High, who, because of socio economic reasons, need support and guidance to fulfill their academic potential and develop their social skills.

Jamalco’s Manager, Corporate Services and Government Affairs, Leo Lambert while giving an overview of the programme, also announced that mentees who maintain an average of 60% and above will benefit from scholarships to assist with their education expenses

Students selected for the programme will be those who would benefit from strong ongoing interface with a role model.  Others include those who exhibit behavioral challenges, who could benefit from social exposure, or whose social skills could be enhanced through structured interaction.

The Jamalco mentors will help the students to excel in their academic performance, as well as to improve their discipline and performance in extra-curricular activities.  They will be selected from among volunteers who meet specific criteria including exhibiting strong moral values and embrace Alcoa values, and be willing to be trained, participate in orientation and receive certification. The mentors will be interviewed by a panel and will be required to abide by the Code of Conduct.

The programme will include a unique feature, a mentorship club that will help bring mentors and mentees together and will help the students participate in enriching group activities.

The mentorship programme will be guided by an advisory committee consisting of representatives of Jamalco, the school’s administration, the Parent Teachers’ Association and the student body.

Jamalco will include other schools in its operating areas in the future as a part of its wider Jamalco in Schools programme.
