Jamalco Volunteers Plant Trees for Month of Service

Some 100 Jamalco and community volunteers planted just over 300 trees on Friday, October 3 to begin the company’s annual Month of Service activities and to mark World Tree Planting Day.

Jamalco, 55% owned by Alcoa, is joining with Alcoa employees worldwide to expand, celebrate, and recognize the company’s commitment to volunteering. This year’s activities are being held under the theme, “Alcoa in the Community: People making a difference.”

On Friday, the volunteers, led by Alcoa’s President for Latin America & the Caribbean Frank Feder, Jamalco’s Managing Director Jerome Maxwell and members of the management team planted trees at 9 schools in the company’s operating areas in Clarendon and Manchester.

Trees were planted at Vere Technical High, Hayes Primary and Junior High, Mineral Heights Primary, Ashley All Age and Toll Gate Primary schools in Clarendon. In South Manchester the schools were Prattville Primary and Campbell’s Castle All Age and in North Manchester, Harry Watch All Age and Comfort Hall Primary.

Mr. Feder commended the volunteers for their effort in planting the trees as this will benefit the environment and future generations. The trees will contribute to the achievement of sustainability, enhance the environment, provide shade, offer habitat for wildlife, reduce storm water runoff and absorb CO2 from the atmosphere.

Jamalco and community volunteers will plant some 2000 fruit, hardwood and ornamental trees during October as part of the company’s revitalized tree-planting programme. A total of 5,000 trees will be planted by the end of 2008.

Jamalcoans also join in a thanksgiving service on Sunday, October 5 at the Mineral Heights Baptist Church as part of the Month of Service celebrations.

Other activities to benefit the community planned for October include repairing and refurbishing the St. Jago Basic School and planting trees at the Harmons and St Jago All Age schools in Harmons, Manchester on Friday, October 10.  The work is being done with assistance from the Alcoa Foundation, Jamalco and local contractors Trevor Dunkley and RKSS Construction.

The Month of Service will end with some 50 volunteers repairing the roof and the kitchen and repainting the May Pen Infirmary.  The work will be carried out over several days in October and will culminate in two workdays to paint the home of some 170 indigent persons and plant trees on the grounds of the home on Friday and Saturday, October 24 and 25.  Several Jamalco contractors have joined with the company to fund repairs to the roof which leaks badly, making life uncomfortable for the residents. These are Cousins Construction, K& D, CCC, Quality Plus and FC Reynolds Limited.
