Nearly 80% of Icelanders regard aluminum smelters as having a positive impact on the Icelandic economy

Over 78% of Icelanders regard aluminum smelters as having a positive impact on the Icelandic economy. Just over 8% view the impact as rather or very negative. This was among the findings of a national survey conducted by Capacent Gallup in Iceland for Alcoa Fjardaál.

Fjardaál's Town Meetings in East Iceland

The start-up of Alcoa Fjardaál is finished, and the hiring of employees is being completed. The production lines in the casting house are approaching full productivity, and the discharge of greenhouse gases and other emissions is within the limits stipulated in the aluminum smelter's operating license.

Alcoa Fjarðaál: setting a new standard in aluminum production
In June 2007, Alcoa officially opened Fjarðaál ("aluminum of the fjords"), an aluminum smelter at Reydarfjordur in Eastern Iceland. This project is Alcoa's first new primary aluminum facility in 20 years.
