Overview
We expect to begin accepting applications for the majority of the workforce at Fjarðaál during 2006 so please do not send us your applications yet.

We are receiving numerous enquiries about the level of education and training that would be required to support an application for employment.

There are few, if any, unskilled jobs required in the operation of a technically advanced, modern aluminium smelter. Depending on the nature of the task the required skills generally develop through a combination of academic learning and work-based training.

At this early stage it is difficult to be precise about the overall composition of the workforce but generally, our operating positions, which will be the majority of our workforce, will be filled by people who have sound secondary school or technical college education. Extensive training will equip these people with the skills they will need to successfully participate in the operation of the Fjarðaál smelter.

Our senior operational positions will require qualifications in science-based disciplines such as mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering. Management and senior administrative positions will typically be filled by people with tertiary science or commercial qualifications.

All of these positions will be open to men and women alike; Alcoa bases its recruitment processes on merit.

In addition, Alcoa's manufacturing and business processes are designed to support ongoing learning and improvement. For more insight into Alcoa's work climate and our approach to lifelong learning we encourage you to click here: http://www.alcoa.com/global/en/careers/opportunity.asp
