Principal occupation: Consultant, The Study Group, a nonprofit institution assisting development in South Africa, since 1996.  Advisor to the United Nations Fund for International Partnerships, since 1998. 

Recent business experience: Mr. Thomas was Chairman, The September 11th Fund, 2001-2006. 

He was President and Chief Executive Officer of The Ford Foundation from 1979 until 1996.

Mr. Thomas was President and Chief Executive Officer of Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, a nonprofit community development corporation, from 1967 to 1977 and prior to that served as Deputy Policy Commissioner in charge of legal matters for the New York City Policy Department.
