Aircraft Program Evolution
- Amelia Earhart pilots a Lockheed 5B Vega, becoming the first woman to make a solo transatlantic flight.
- The Douglas DC3 takes to the air carrying 21 passengers and a crew of 3. It later becomes the first commercial aircraft to operate at a profit without carrying mail.
Alcoa Aerospace Technology Evolution
- Demand for higher strength alloys leads Alcoa to develop the Alclad 2024-T3 alloy. This weight-saving alloy proves essential to the success of the DC3.
- Louis Huck invents the first aluminum blind rivet, which was later used in the B-24 bomber. In 1940, he founded Huck Fasteners.
